PermalinkDid anyone watch that debate? Dean just does not get the Confederate flag issue, does he? I mean, I don't think he's a bigot or anything but he just doesn't understand how divisive an symbol the flag is in certain parts of the country. Is this guy really ready to be the President?

PermalinkSure he is. The debate scuffling was nitpicking over semantics. It does reflect the weakness of a regional governor from the north. It would help to have a deeper understanding of the South. Those who ran for national office, native sons, and those who've prepared by traveling the country understand more of the culture, the values, and the diversity of one our nation's economic powerhouses.
Dean said we should be inclusive of people with whom we disagree. To do so is to expand the Democratic party and deprive the GOP of core constituencies. Fumbled language aside, the big tent is vital to winning back congress and winning the White House. And Dean defined jobs, health care, retirement security, and schools as the common ground where choosing Dems should be the right choice.
Is this the right mix of issues to help us win electoral votes in the Midwest and South? Which candidate can speak that inclusion? Say it in a way that believably promises solutions while not alienating our Democratic base?

PermalinkPhil, semantics matter. I agree with what I think he was TRYING to say, but that's not what he was saying. You can't "assume" in such situations because, in situations such as these, words -- the actual words -- matter. It's the democrats (our) naivete about just such things that have allowed conservatives to dominate the discourse for so long and influence opinion -- see the Lakoff stuff that was posted.
Moreover, Dean's comments don't correspond to reality. As Edwards was saying, most people in the South don't drive around in pickups with Confederate flags. Dean's stereotyping an entire region of the country and appealing (to those who live in that section of the country and those who know something about it) to a proudly "unreconstructed" segment of the population while simultaneously alienating almost the entire African-American community.
On a funnier note, here's what ABC's the note said about Clark and Kucinich's wardrobe during the debate (http://abcnews.go.com/sections/politics/TheNote/TheNote.html):
"Other than that, the young people asked some good questions; the outfits worn by Wes Clark and Dennis Kucinich brought to mind either
a. a shopping trip to the Gap
b. "Now's the time on Sprockets when we dance!"
and/or
c. a bicycle cop on South Beach"
